Reflection On Human Development Late Adulthood - 1264 Words
Reflection on Human Development: Late Adulthood The human lifespan concludes with the late adulthood phase, in which adults 65 and older experience transitions that interconnect with oneââ¬â¢s physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development. Due to the uncertainty and variability of how long an individual can live for, there are disparities amid defining late adulthood. Contemporary researchers divided aging into three categories: young old (65-74), old old (75-84), and oldest old (85 and above) (Papalia Martorell, 2014). Another method of classifying age is measuring oneââ¬â¢s functional age, which refers to how well the individual can function physically in his/her environment (Papalia Martorell, 2014). Brain deterioration can be aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Even though wisdom is not limited to late adulthood, researchers indicate that life experiences are associated with this cognitive ability, which explains the perception that older adults are wise (Papalia Martorell, 2014). In Eriksonââ¬â¢s ego integrity versus despair stage, one gains the virtue of wisdom if he/she successfully achieves ego integrity. In other words, an older adult must acknowledge everything he/she has accomplished in life and admit the things his/she missed out on. The challenge is to accept oneââ¬â¢s life the way it is and consider the inevitable death. If one is not able to attain that level of awareness and continue his/her legacy by giving back to his/her community, the individual may live the rest of his/her life in despair (Papalia Martorell, 2014). It is integral to assess different coping mechanisms because in late adulthood because chronic stress hinders oneââ¬â¢s ability to fight off illnesses (Papalia Martorell, 2014). According to the cognitive-appraisal model, individuals tackle stressful situations in two different ways, through problem-focused coping or emotional-focused coping. Individuals who use problem-focused coping believe that something can be done to lessen the intensity of the situation, so they use a direct approach to change the outcome of the event (Papalia Martorell, 2014). However, adults who utilize the emotion-focused coping skills believeShow MoreRelatedHuman Development1184 Words à |à 5 PagesHuman Development Stage Analysis Chloe PSY/201 November 23, 2014 Dr. Janis White Human Development Stage Analysis Today I have two patientsââ¬â¢s that I will analyze for human behavior and understanding of the developmental process that relates psychologically. Alice Munros an Ounce of Cure free essay sample
Modern literary analyses and studies make the link between literary techniques such as narrative and storytelling and several other disciplines. Thus, one may find the theories of narrative and storytelling extending up to several major disciplines, such as philosophy, psychology, and literary criticism. In the view of different experts in literary analyses, there is a close connection between narrative or storytelling and the definition of the nature of self and personal identity. The former has been understood as influential in determining the definition of the latter and several writers have significantly contributed to this characteristic through their narrative and storytelling. These writers organize the characteristics and ideals of characters into a cohesive whole which develops a sense of who a person is. The narrative theory of identity as presented in the memories, events, and dreams of various characters and their personality traits illustrates the significant contribution made by literature in the realization of the narrative theory of identity. One of the superior examples of this relationship between literature and narrative theory of identity is Alice Munroââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"An Ounce of Cureâ⬠and the author has been celebrated as making observations on the episodic nature of life through her stories. ââ¬Å"An Ounce of Cureâ⬠presents an important episodic nature of life through the mid-teenage problems and crises in the life of the main character and the major theme of the story reminds the readers that even the most repulsive issues which flip over every person at some episode of his life will be dispensed with in the course of life. It is through the effective narrative and storytelling that Munro conveys her points to the readers and the narrator in this story, who lives through the atrocious stage in her teenage life, presents her viewpoints in the most convincing manner. Therefore, Alice Munro, through her short story ââ¬Å"An Ounce of Cure,â⬠illustrates the relationship between literature and narrative theory of identity and the narrative and storytelling of the story helped the author in this attempt. In literature, the authorââ¬â¢s personal experiences or the various aspects of their life will be resonated in the writing and, when the writers depend on the art of writing to express them completely, narrative becomes a reflection of personality. In her short stories, Alice Munro artistically makes use of this technique of self expression through narrative and the situations and experiences in the authorââ¬â¢s life influenced the chronological progress of her writing. The use of complex characters, setting, ironic humor, and symbolism etc in her short stories helped Munro present the stories in a realistic way. An Ounce of Cureâ⬠presents the story of a realistic character who confronts some fundamental mid-teenage problems. ââ¬Å"In ââ¬ËAn Ounce of Cureââ¬â¢ the young girl who narrates the story has her first encounter with a strong drink while she is feeling jilted and doing a fairly regular baby-sitting job in a small town. The result is predictably disastrous. The narration is almost apologetic about the farcical element and the style is determinedly lively What we get is good, clean, but rather obvious fun. (Martin, 1987, p 37). Therefore, narrative and storytelling in Munroââ¬â¢s short story significantly helps the writer to convey her own life experiences and the characters present instances from the authorââ¬â¢s life. Storytelling in ââ¬Å"An Ounce of Cureâ⬠has an important role in depicting the teenage crises in the life of the heroine and the quality of the story informs the readers of similar episodes in real life. The author has been effective in presenting the mid-teenage problem of the girl in a realistic manner. The heroine of the story narrates one of the most embarrassing events of her adolescence as she recalled it. The incident presented in the story illustrates the truth that choices have a permanent effect, because they inexorably direct to end results which influence the course of growth and maturity. The main character in the story considered that the undying love for her boyfriend was the goal of her preordained life and the narrator has been able to present the world of the teenagers realistically. They frequently exaggerate their tragedies which results in certain life threatening situations to them. Alice Munro is effective in efficiently managing the characters in the story that make it very realistic to the readers. In life situations, one finds several examples of teenagers who are driven by the same passion of the heroine of the story. In one such interesting case, a thirteen year old boy named Sam Leeson hanged himself after being tormented on social networking website Bebo and the reason was his liking for Emo rock bands. Sensitive Sam Leeson was bombarded with cruel messages because of his long hair and dark clothes. His tormentors also mocked his love of Emo stars such as My Chemical Romance and their angst-ridden lyrics. Sam was found hanged in his bedroom after months of abuse. â⬠(Coles, 2008) One may relate this real life incident in the life of Sam Leeson to the experiences of the young heroine of Munro story and the character wants to kill herself over a sm all crush in the similar fashion. This illustrates the superior quality of the narrative style which appear realistic to the readers. The storytelling in the short story by Munro reminds one of similar life experiences of teenagers and the realistic style of the narration helps the writer appear convincing to the readers. Alice Munro makes use of the conventional realistic narrative with the intention of providing order and structure to her fiction and female protagonist. This has been an issue confronted by several female writers who hold that historical and genealogical time has little truth in it and they have a tough task in providing the exact order to the narrative. She may acquiesce to the tradition of chronological time in conventional, realistic narrative, as Alice Munro does in an early piece like ââ¬ËAn Ounce of Cureââ¬â¢ yet all the while speculating on and defensively measuring her fiction as she imposes fictional order on absurd life â⬠(Rasporich, 1990, p 178). The narrative framework helped the author in presenting the personality and identity of a teenager and to depict the life experien ce of a young person in the most convincing manner. The events surrounding a crucial experience in the teenagerââ¬â¢s life is depicted in a realistic style and narrator of the story is both appealing and irrepressible. She presents the events as powerfully as the influential style of Anne Shirley. However, there is a strong opposition to the narrative style of Alice Munro and critics feel that she depicts her characters and their setting in terms of an incongruously cut off and unrealistic vision of adolescence. These criticisms of the narrative strategy of the author may be justified as essential to upholding the humorous quality of the short story. More importantly, this quixotically light and ironic quality of the story can be understood as essential to an understanding of the mental makeup of adolescence. The evidences from real life experiences illustrate that there is little unrealistic about the story of the young woman. The main theme of the story also justifies the narrative strategy adopted and the presentation of the story and the theme by the narrator assumes that she has lived through such a horrible stage in her own teenage life. In the story, the narrator does not provide her name, though she is the major character and conveys he points in first person narrative style. The narration of the teenagers experience is in the most convincing manner and the narrator becomes a reliable character as she depicts the story of a stage in her own life. As a teenager, the narrator feels insecure as her parents have already been ââ¬Å"hoping for a lesser rather than a greater disasterââ¬âan elopement, say, with a boy who could never earn his living, rather than an abduction into the White Slave trade. â⬠(Munro, 2002, 451) The narrator presents this disaster as her pre-conceived destiny and this also contributes to her instability as a teenager.

Improvisation free essay sample
As I listen to Buck Hill improvise over Oleo I am constantly struck by the intelligence and placement of each line in spite of playing at what I consider superhuman speed. My ability to improvise on jazz piano has made me more spontaneous and creative, a useful trait in my academic and artistic worlds, and interpersonal relationships. As Louis Armstrong asserted, ââ¬Å"What we play is lifeâ⬠. The improvisation of Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, and Charlie Parker comes straight from the soul. Jazz improvisation captures a personââ¬â¢s essence as each note reflects the musicianââ¬â¢s emotions, past, present, and future. According to Gershwin, ââ¬Å"Life is a lot like jazzâ⬠¦itââ¬â¢s best when you improviseâ⬠. Neither life nor jazz goes according to plan. Armed with a ââ¬Å"lead sheetâ⬠I have guidelines to fill with my own improvisation. A lead sheet is like the concrete plans people make for life. For example, I plan to do well in high school, go to a college of my choice, and end up with a career I love. We will write a custom essay sample on Improvisation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Though I plan on remaining inside these boundaries, there is room for creativity, self-exploration, and expression. I can choose what activities to do, what college to go to, and what to major in. In life, a musician exists within guidelines but makes the piece her own. Charlie Parker exclaimed, ââ¬Å"If you donââ¬â¢t live it, it wonââ¬â¢t come out of your hornâ⬠. I agree. If we are the sum of our experiences, then our music must reflect this. Understanding improvisation leads to a greater appreciation of life. I am a more interesting person because I refuse to do the bare minimum. I choose to be original, and so use improvisation as I learn. I am passionate about new information, because I understand it is my duty to add to it. Nothing new ever happens if you keep doing the same thing as everyone else. I strongly believe without creativity a piece of work becomes completely useless. I am constantly improvising as I argue my thesis on feminism in the 1960s in History or explain my theories on Anna Karenina in English class. Each idea must have an aspect of creativity otherwise it is completely unimportant. My piano teacher reminds me that when improvising I need not ââ¬Å"reinvent the wheel.â⬠For example, there would be no computer without the typewriter, and no air conditioning without refrigeration. Having taken this to heart, I realize this is true in all facets of life. It is the ability to think on the spot that makes a person successful in other aspects as well. As a sailing instructor I constantly improvise on the water as obstacles came up. Skirting around weather, broken motorboats, students, and rocks is a difficult task, and I understand that for my students to learn I had to approach teaching in a creative way. Improvisation is the most honest form of music, because it is unedited and spontaneous. Without creativity, nothing would ever change, and the world would become completely stagnant. The most beautiful ability of the human mind is thought, and improvisation shows the boundless intelligence of the brain. I know that when I am not afraid to improvise I am capable of greater things.

10 Rules to Remember from Every Annotated Bibliography Book You Come across
10 Rules to Remember from Every Annotated Bibliography Book You Come across Whenever a paper or factual book is written it is essential to provide accurate information regarding the source of all the information used in it. This is usually referred to as an annotated bibliography and it should have a list of books, articles and documents used including the following information: authorââ¬â¢s name book name date of publication page number of the quote brief description of the citation and its relevance (about 150 words) The purpose of this is to avoid any claims of plagiarism, allow credit where it is due and to allow readers to assess the validity of the sources quoted. In order to ensure all the relevant information is enclosed you should follow the same rules every time you create an annotated bibliography: When researching and writing be sure to note what sources you are using. There are apps available which can help you to record this information. The best option is to make a note of every citation as you put it into your work. Ideally you could list it in the bibliography as you write it and then sort the bibliography at the end. The essential rule is to make sure you record all the relevant information, without missing any! You should ensure that all works quoted are relevant to your paper and that the sources are reliable. Every annotation should have a concise description: it is best to write it as you include it in your paper. It will justify why it is used and why you are applying it to justify your point. Your annotated bibliography should always be formatted in the same way. The details of your citation should be set out in the same style as your reference list. The annotation description must comprise a summary of the work you are quoting, its focus and purpose; an overview of the theory, the findings and the argument presented by the author; a summary of why you feel this work is useful and relevant to your paper and the credibility of the author. Always put your bibliography in alphabetical order; this should be easy if using a word processor. An annotated bibliography book must still be written in the appropriate academic style and use full sentences, it should also include a good use of transition words such as ââ¬Ëmoreoverââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëhoweverââ¬â¢. Never repeat information, i.e. if the title explains the context do not write it again. Never attempt to cross reference citations or text, this will simply confuse and defuse the strength of your argument. It is highly recommended to follow these rules while writing annotated bibliography because these are the basics that professors always pay special attention to. The most important rule to remember is to be careful with the details. Also take into account the citation style you are required to use during writing annotated bibliography and to format your citing properly you can make use of Free Citation Generator. So, be attentive and youââ¬â¢ll get the best grades for your academic writing!

Film Theory Research Proposal Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Film Theory - Research Proposal Example Bazin regards cinema as an idealistic phenomenon with technical features resting only in the background. As a humanist, he thrives on the view that the idea is precedent to the invention and is therefore superior to the technical means used in achieving it. In his book The Evolution of the language of Cinema,2 he asserts that the necessity for an idea towards technical means is one that requires new form or style. Bazin states that the cinema is much elevated as compared to photography because of its ability to record the event in time and posits that filmmakers must refrain from false subjective manipulation owing to the complexity of reality which the cinema characteristically pursues. There has been confusion in the domain of film theory concerning Bazin's writings, which can be traced down to the image being filmed and its life counterpart, in which he says that the photographic image is one that may be described as a kind of transfer. It is the object itself which is freed from the conditions of time and space governing it. There is a commonality in the photograph and the object itself whose sameness is pursued by a fashion of the fingerprint.3 (Referring to Andre Bazin's essay, "The Evolution of Film Language", analyze the ways in which William Wyler explores the moral and emotional conflicts experienced by... The film is considered a masterpiece of cinematic craftsmanship in which first-rate support actors gave life to their roles.4 Wyler's film shows details that depict Bazin's ideas in The Evolution of Film Language. Cinema as an idealistic phenomenon5 which Bazin explores in his essay is embodied in The Little Foxes with the film's portrayal of greed and avarice having the real message it wants to convey - that of the consequences of evil acts which men must avoid. As Bazin generally describes a film as a medium of duplicating reality, Wyler was able to successfully convey this duplication in real-life experiences of wealth and greed in the Hubbard and Giddens family, in which surefire downfall awaits people of extreme greed. Wyler explores the moral conflicts experienced by his heroine Regina Giddens with the use of depth-of-field photography through the captured emotions needed to surface from a villainous character. How other characters were portrayed, such as that of being kind (Ho race and Alexandra Giddens) reinforced the evilness of the heroine through implied comparison. The moral conflicts are tackled in the story with wealth and money as the groundwork of the exhibited behavior of the characters, whether acting upon it or away from its influences and corruption. Regina Giddens is in a situation which might be considered a maze in which she was to succumb to social norms of this time where a woman does not bring money with her when she gets married regardless of the family's wealth. Hence, she must rely financially on her husband. The social norms had placed her in a stringent situation totally not giving her a space to express her fondness for money. An attempt to put her daughter Alexandra in marriage to Leo, Alexandra's
